Terdapat beberapa ketentuan saat mengubah kalimat aktif menjadi pasif atau sebaliknya.
1. Tense tidak boleh berubah. Penggunaan “are painting” (are + Ving) menunjukkan bahwa kalimat tersebut merupakan kalimat Present Continuous. Jadi, kalimat pasifnya pun harus dalam bentuk Present Continuous. Polanya adalah “S + is/am/are + being + V3 + by + O”.
2. Subjek di kalimat aktif menjadi objek di kalimat pasif. Sebaliknya, objek di kalimat aktif menjadi subjek di kalimat pasif. Jadi, nanti yang menjadi subjek di kalimat pasifnya adalah “my office”, sedangkan “they” berubah menjadi objek. Kata ganti objek untuk they adalah them.
My office merupakan subjek tunggal, maka to be-nya adalah is. Kata kerja painting ditulis dalam bentuk verb 3, yaitu painted.
