Soal menanyakan bentuk kata kerja yang tepat untuk melengkapi rumpang pada kalimat menggunakan Past Tense atau Past Continuous Tense.
Penggunaan paling umum dari Past Continuous adalah menyatakan atau berbicara tentang sesuatu yang sedang terjadi di sekitar waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Sedangkan Simple Past Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan atau berbicara tentang sesuatu yang terjadi di masa lampau di waktu yang tidak spesifik.
Dilihat dari strukturnya, kalimat soal harus dilengkapi oleh pola kalimat Past Continuous Tense karena terdapat keterangan waktu yang spesifik yaitu ‘at this time yesterday’.
Rumus dari Past Continuous Tense adalah S + to be (was/were) + V-ing + O/C
To be ‘was’ digunakan untuk subjek I, she, he, dan it.
To be ‘were’ digunakan untuk subjek you, we, dan they.
Subjek kalimat di atas adalah ‘they’. Maka to be yang digunakan adalah were. Sehingga, kalimat lengkapnya menjadi “They were playing football at this time yesterday.”
Jadi, jawabannya adalah ‘were playing’.
